UX Design Pro Bono

I believe design plays a critical role in improving society. That’s why I’m always seeking opportunities to work on projects with meaningful social impact.

Vera’s Incarceration Trends tool

Vera Institute of Justice needed an interactive data tool that can be used for reference and measurement by justice system stakeholders and others looking to understand how their county uses jail and prison incarceration and how it compares to others over time. As part of a collaboration between Vera and Goldman Sachs, I was asked to provide user research, develop personas, create a mini design system, create high-fidelity wireframes and guide developers in building the application.

The Problem
Design a web-based tool that compiles time-series data on people incarcerated in each of the 3,000+ U.S. counties.

The Goal
The objective was to create a tool with easy-to-use features that help:

  • Inform the public debate on mass incarceration and inspire data-driven reform.

  • Provide easily accessible information on how local-level incarceration has changed since 1970.

  • Advance research on jails and prisons.

Spotlight

Spotlight is the leading victim identification tool used by law enforcement to aid in juvenile sex trafficking investigations. As part of a collaboration between Thorn and Goldman Sachs, I was asked to provide high-fidelity wireframes for an initial MVP.

The Problem
Design an application that helps investigators visualize millions of data points and the complexity of a juvenile’s trafficking situation and locate those most at risk.

The Goal
The objective was to create an application with easy-to-use features developed from direct law enforcement feedback that aligns with the investigation process.
